Principal's Message, 9/21/2015

Monday, September 21, 2015 - 9:49pm

Thank you to all the families and participants who joined me this past Thursday evening at our “Designing Your Dream School” parent/ student event.  The energy and excitement was palpable as teams explored what they appreciated about Addison and wanted to see improved on campus.  It was wonderful to see the ideas come to life as teams sketched their ideas and created three-dimensional prototypes.  The models were displayed in the courtyard on Friday afternoon for the entire community to enjoy.  Finally, if you were not able to attend the event, extra copies of the work mats and directions for the activity are in the office to pick up.  Feel free to continue investigating ways to improve Addison and turn in all your completed work mats to the office by Friday, 9/25.  Finally, I would especially like to thank our Addison parent, Stuart Coulson, who initially came up with this idea for bringing the community together for this event in order to work towards a collective vision for the school we’d like to build.

This month, I would like to recognize the Addison teachers for their extra time and dedication in launching a new school year and committing to new practices to support student growth.  Besides the grade level PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities) that have already met a few time to analyze the beginning of the year math and writing assessments, teachers have signed up to observe “Math Talks” modeled by our Math TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment).  Math Talks allow students to think critically about numbers and discuss their conceptual understanding.  Also, as I walked through the staff lounge at lunch the other day, a group of teachers were overheard sharing ideas about implementing our new Readers Workshop Curriculum.  As I mentioned at Back to School Night, every day I feel so fortunate to work with a creative and committed teaching staff that constantly challenge themselves to meet the needs of all students and learn from each other.

This upcoming week is the Book Fair and I encourage you to attend and pick a few favorite books to share with your child.  The proceeds directly benefit Addison and with the new Readers Workshop curriculum, we can use the funds to purchase leveled books for the classroom libraries.  I also hope to see you this Friday at the Hoedown as we celebrate the new school year through food, fun, music, and dancing!
