Principal's Message, 9/20/2016

Tuesday, September 20, 2016 - 6:55pm

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Principal’s Coffee on September 9. It was wonderful to see over forty parents and to hear your thoughts and questions in an open forum. If you were not able to attend, please see below for the highlights of our discussion:

  • Math- At the Board Meeting on September 13, the Board approved piloting two math programs, Bridges and Eureka/Engage New York. There is the possibility we may also pilot a third program later in the year after it has been more closely evaluated. At Addison, we have spent a lot of time exploring math in our Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). During the past couple weeks, teachers discussed four questions specifically related to math during this first trimester: What do we expect students to learn? How do we know they are learning it? How do we respond when they do not learn the content? How do we respond when they have already learned the content? Feel free to touch base with your child’s teacher regarding their discussions, pacing, and planning as a result of our PLC.

  • Addison Remodel- Also at the September 13 Board meeting, we presented the schematic design and expect to receive an approval on September 27. One parent expressed concern about air pollution during construction so I will discuss this concern with our project manager and make sure to address it in the construction updates. Also, parents expressed a desire for more after school care (AKC) and I will be in touch with our PACCC Executive Director to explore options.

  • Kindergarten- Last year, the Board approved full day Kindergarten to begin this school year. On October 10, Kindergarten students will attend school until 2:20pm. We are encouraging participation in a full day program but if parents choose to opt out of full day, forms are in the office and need to be completed by September 30.

  • Foreign Language- Currently, foreign languages are not offered at the elementary schools. However, we have had a variety of foreign language after school programs so if you have an interest in seeing a foreign language class scheduled at Addison in the Spring, contact our PTA club coordinator, Nishita Kothary (NKothary@stanfordhealthcare.org)

This past week, you may also have seen the PAPD patrolling our surrounding streets before and after school. An officer has been assigned to Addison four days per week and he plans to enforce traffic safety on a regular basis. The most important reminder is to please not park and leave your car unattended on Addison Avenue. There is plenty of parking on Lincoln and the gates are unlocked before and after school. He also said there were a number of illegal U-turns and speeding on Addison and Webster.

In order to avoid the rush and crowds, students can be dropped off at 7:45am in the MP Room for breakfast or 8am when we have supervision on the blacktop. Also, please see the Addison Traffic and Safety link http://addison.pausd.org/about/traffic-and-safety for more ideas and tips regarding alternative modes of transportation. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep all Addison students safe!
