Principal's Message, 1/24/2016

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 - 9:43am

It's hard to believe we are almost at the end of January and approaching the 100th Day of School on Jan. 27th!

There are many exciting events happening this upcoming week including the 4th Grade Coloma Parent Information Night on 1/26, the 5th grade Freedom Assembly on 1/27, and the K-2 Ice Skating Party on 1/27.  We are also planning our second session of Addison Academy, our after school math intervention program, that will begin on 2/1.  Invitations will be sent out this week.

At our last SSC meeting, I provided a quick update to the Council regarding the possible Addison remodel.  The donor is still considering the scope and budget associated with the conceptual design so as soon as I have more information, I will share with our community.

Finally, I wanted to share some highlights from our Parent Education Night last Wednesday, "The Well Balanced Student".  As parents, we considered how we would define success for our children.  Not surprisingly, many parents responded that we would consider our children successful if they were happy, resilient, and found purpose in their adult lives.  Overall, parents commented that if their children treated others with kindness, compassion and empathy, they would consider them successful.  The presenter then encouraged each family to create a values statement, a list of what is most important to those family members that will guide behaviors and choices.   The values statement can be revisited as often as necessary especially when children are feeling either academic or social pressures from their peers or community.

One of the inspirational leaders I follow on Twitter is George Couros.  This past week, George wrote a blog called What Success (and Learning) Really Looks Like.  Check it out... it's a short read with important considerations regarding the non-linear path to learning and "success".

Sincerely,
Amanda Boyce
