Principal's Message, 1/10/2016

Monday, January 11, 2016 - 10:46am

Dear Addison Families,

I hope the transition back to school for you and your child(ren) was a smooth one.
It was exciting to observe the student's joyful smiles as they reconnected with friends and staff this past week!

On Friday, I hosted a Principal's Coffee. Our Teacher on Special Assignment, Mangla Oza, and I discussed the shifts in math with the Common Core State Standards and specific instructional strategies being used in the classroom such as "Number Talks". These new practices encourage strong math behaviors of mathematicians regardless of the content: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Practice/. These behavioral standards are being encouraged by teachers as an extension to the math content as many of our proficient student mathematicians still struggle with explaining their reasoning and identifying patterns in structure. If the math content is easily comprehensible for your child, consider pushing them deeper in to the content by exploring these behavioral standards. Our Superintendent, Dr. Mc Gee, also joined the session and was able to answer questions from a district perspective. We discussed the social/emotional support at Addison and the need to unify our social/emotional support for students through twelfth grade. Also, there was a request for classroom teachers to communicate "A Day in the Life" of their students so I will be sharing this request with them.
As we look ahead and plan for the second half of the school year, I wanted to share the school goals that were approved by our School Site Council in November. Feel free to ask me or your child's teacher about our work towards meeting these goals:

  • 100% of teachers will implement readers/ writers workshop instructional model and select one focus area for growth within the model (mini- lesson, selecting mentor texts, "assigning just right books", conferring, assessing, closure, etc.)
  • 90% of 4th and 5th grade students will show an increase in their scaled score on the CAASPP math assessment
  • 90% of 1st- 5th grade students will make one years growth on the learning progression Teacher's College rubric for informational writing
  • 100% of Addison students will experience social/emotional and behavior support through the district's anti-bullying training, the Project Cornerstone ABC Curriculum, Character Traits education in alignment with the ABC Curriculum, social skills lessons, and being provided diverse environments for quiet play and creation.
  • 100% of 1st- 5th grade students will have four staff members that have interacted with them on a positive personal level therefore increasing the overall connections between staff and students

Our next School Site Council meeting is Thursday, January 14th, @ 3pm in the Library. These meetings are open to anyone in the community so feel free to join us!

Finally, I wanted to also share a couple facility updates/requests:

  • We are currently replacing our Lost and Found Closet behind the baseball diamond (near the MP Room). We have a temporary Lost and Found tub in the MP Room until the permanent structure is replaced.
  • As the rain continues, we are expecting more students to come and leave school by car. Please be aware that there is no parking on Addison Avenue adjacent to the school. The Addison bus zone needs (near room 1) needs to remain open at all times.
  • Primary parents- Our intermediate students are dismissed at 2:45pm. Therefore, the 4th and 5th grade teachers have requested that when primary students are picked up at 2:20pm and stay on campus, they play quietly as students are still learning in rooms 11-16 and 21.

Thank you again for all your support and I look forward to working alongside you in 2016!

Sincerely,
Amanda Boyce
Addison Principal
